The ad-supported DirecTV Preview service appears in part to be a kind of sampler package, meant to get users to upgrade to one of the premium offerings.

In the fourth quarter of this year, AT&T will start selling cable-like bundles of TV to people across the country through a new app. Subscribers won't need an AT&T wireless phone or an AT&T broadband connection at home. Back in January, AT&T announced a $100 a month for unlimited data, talk and text plan on a single smartphone for folks who signed up for DirecTV or AT&T U-Verse TV service.

AT&T, which closed its acquisition of DirecTV last July, said it will offer the new OTT services on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming players, and Web browsers. To make sure it keeps up, the company said today that it will begin letting you buy and watch cable TV on whatever screen you want with nothing more than an Internet connection.

This affordable offer will deliver a mobile-first user experience for people wanting to watch premium video and made-for-digital content directly on a smartphone, regardless of the wireless provider. The free ad-supported DirecTV Preview will have a more limited selection of content than DirecTV Now, including the company's own Audience channel.

"These new video subscription models reflect the flexible content choices, viewing options and simple, transparent pricing that consumers want". "It has great social characteristics and we'll be helping them very aggressively distribute that product when it hits the market".

AT&T is trying to keep up with customers' growing appetite for video and desire to stream TV shows, sports games and cat videos on their mobile devices.
