Six Flags to add 'virtual reality' to nine roller coasters

Starting this month, nine Six Flags parks across the U.S. will introduce a feature where riders get to wear Samsung's Oculus-powered Gear VR headset while on a roller coaster.

Amusement park giant Six Flags announced their partnership with Samsung in order to bring virtual reality to roller coasters.

Six Flags and Samsung will debut the VR roller coaster experiences at nine different locations across North America, starting next week and into the summer.

"It's actually a positional device that knows exactly where the train is on the track any time throughout the ride", Six Flags corporate director of design Sam Rhodes told Mashable.

What about the potential for motion sickness, as this has been reported by some who have used VR while simply standing or sitting still?

The VR rides are part of a marketing partnership in which Samsung becomes the official technology partner of the theme-park company. This does not mean park visitors will be sitting in chairs wearing VR goggles that make them feel as if they're on a roller coaster.

On New Revolution Virtual Reality Coaster, riders will be transported to a futuristic battle to save planet earth from an alien invasion.

Well, riders will experience a ride through a virtual 360 degree headset, instead of seeing real life. During the ascent, riders can test fire their weapons using the world's first-ever interactive gameplay technology on a roller coaster. Phoenix, a new flying scooter ride in the Avenue Aventure region of La Ronde, will join Gravitor (another new ride, which lifts guests high off the ground) as the other two new experiences being offered to guests this season. The New Revolution's theme will have riders assuming the role of co-pilot on a fighter jet, diving in loops at 60 miles per hour to battle aliens.

But Six Flags is claiming to enhance the thrill by using virtual reality.
