2 police killed in auto bomb attack in southeast Turkey

The attack targeted the traffic police station and lodgings in the town of Nusaybin, bordering Syria, where the security forces are battling militants linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. Tensions escalated in July 2015, after 33 Kurdish activists were killed in a suicide blast in the Suruc district and two Turkish policemen were later killed by the PKK, which led to Ankara's military campaign against the group.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but security forces think Kurdish militants are behind the attack. Hundreds of people have been killed. The incident took place in the southeastern province of Mardin near the Syrian border.

It also said Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had arrived in the province for a brief visit.

Violence has increased in Turkey, where the government has recently been engaged in an intensified crackdown on the country's Kurdish population in the southeast.

But Turkey has not shelled any positions held by Syrian Kurdish fighters inside Syria since the ceasefire was implemented from at midnight last Friday, the official said.

Some 145 people have died since July in three separate suicide bomb attacks that authorities have blamed on the Islamic State group, including 12 German tourists who were killed in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district on January 12. Those attacks killed more than 140 people.

The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, launched an insurrection in the 1980s seeking greater political and cultural rights for Turkey's Kurds.
